InCoManD webinar - Peridynamic models for corrosion damage and fracture
Materials degrade in various ways: some corrode, some erode, some fracture. I will discuss our recent results on quantitative predictions for these phenomena. These results are obtained using Peridynamic (PD) models, which offer new ways to simulate complex problems by eliminating restricting assumptions inherent in classical models, like differentiability of the unknowns. I will explain how these models differ from those based on partial-differential equations and show why they may offer better solutions for simulating the evolution of corrosion damage, for example. Three-dimensional models for pitting corrosion, intergranular corrosion, crevice corrosion, galvanic corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking will be presented. Since PD models tend to be computationally costly, I will present a new discretization approach, the Fast Convolution-Based Method (FCBM) for efficient PD simulations. Extensions of these models to other similar types of physical phenomena, like erosion, melting and dissolution, coupled with fracture or not, are possible.
